A new survey, published in Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin, reveals the majority of medical professionals–GPs. pharmacists and nurses–believe the current system of prescription charges to be radically overhauled.
Two thirds believe that all people with chronic conditions should be exempt from the crippling burden of prescription charges. At present exemptions do not cover all long-term illnesses: for example, people with diabetes or cancer are exempt from charges, while those with asthma or multiple sclerosis are not.
A huge proportion believed that fees were a barrier to patients requesting or cashing their prescriptions.
The Sickle Cell Society is a member of the Prescription Charges Coalition, and we have been working hard to raise awareness of this issue, and calling for reform. If you agree that prescription charges are currently unfair and you want to see things change, sign the petition today!
