Academic Support For Sickle Cell Pupils

IntoUniversity will be running an afternoon workshop with Professor Simon Dyson from De Montfort University on 13th February 2012 at our Brent Centre St Mark’s Church, Bathurst Gardens, London NW10 5HX . There are 20 places available for young people of secondary school age (11-18) with Sickle Cell Disorders and we would like to invite you to register a child for this exciting opportunity. IntoUniversity is an educational charity that provides local learning centres where young people are inspired to achieve. We provide a quiet, safe and stimulating classroom environment for young people to do their homework or get advice about their future.

Professor Dyson’s workshop with the young people will focus on Sickle Cell, and will include an interactive activity looking at the probabilities involved in inheriting Sickle Cell. The young people will then have the opportunity to ask Professor Dyson questions. Parents will also be invited to the workshop for a lecture by Professor Dyson based on the findings of his team’s research project about the experiences of young people with Sickle Cell disease in schools.  Professor Dyson’s study discussed a school that offered a twilight learning session, supporting pupils who had been absent with their studies. IntoUniversity offers a similar service called Academic Support.

IntoUniversity will conclude with a short presentation about our free services (including Academic Support), how young people can access them and then a brief Q&A.If you are interested in registering a child to take part in this workshop with IntoUniversity, please first think about the following questions:
- Is the child or young person ‘looked-after’?

- Is the child or young person entitled to free school meals?

- Is the child or young person living in social housing?

If the answer to any of these questions is YES, please contact Carlota Olason or Comfort Ndive (on 020 8961 7795/ info@sicklecellsociety.org) for more information and about how to register.
