The annual SCS awards

History, Criteria & Categories:

The Society traditionally recognises exemplary excellence, dedication, commitment and achievements that are of inspirational nature to the sickle cell cause and publicly acknowledges these during our Annual General Meeting. In particular, the following titles are presented to our general meeting:

1) BLACK ON BLACK AWARDS
Established by one of our Patrons, Trevor Phillips OBE, in the 1990s, during his days as editor at London Weekend Television, this certificate recognises creative work by a person personally suffering from a sickle cell disorder.
The award has two categories: Adult and Child (under 18)
2) FLOELLA BENJAMIN AWARD
Established by another Patron, Dr Floella Benjamin OBE, in the 1990s, this certificate is presented to individuals or groups who have made a significant achievement for Sickle Cell eg. by fundraising, or a personal achievement by a person(s) with a Sickle Cell Disorder.
3) OUTSTANDING PERSONALITY AWARD
This certificate is presented to a candidate chosen by the Chairperson of the Society in recognition of the nominee’s outstanding contribution to the cause of the Society. It is usually presented to someone of community standing.
4) OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
This certificate is awarded to either an individual or a group, and recognises achievement in any field of relevance to the sickle cell cause, including fundraising.
5) VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
This certificate is awarded to a candidate chosen by the staff of the Society, in recognition of their contribution to alleviate the suffering of those living with a sickle cell disorder, or to the administrative work of the Society.
6) STAFF MEMBER OF THE YEAR
The chief executive presents this certificate to the colleague judged to have made an exemplary impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of the Society, through team work and documentation.
7) PATRONS & PROFESSIONAL ADVISERS
This certificate is awarded to a candidate who, as an adviser or Patron, supports the governance of the Society by providing professional advice or high profile activity to the Board of Trustees and the Executive Director.

PUBLICITY, RECRUITMENT & DECISION PANEL
These awards are publicised via various channels including our newsletters, website and letters to members and support groups. The Selection Panel usually meets in June ahead of the AGM and comprises of members relevant to each respective award as described above.

Please send nominations for all awards to the Society to arrive not later than Friday 26th June 2015.
The decision of the panel is subject to ratification by the Board.

PRESENTATION
Formal presentation of the awards is made at the AGM, and includes a Citation Certificate. For some awards, a trophy and/or token cash award may also be given.
